Axe Maidens Start 2009 with Their Busiest Week Yet

Posted by James at 6:42 PM ET

The Jacksonville Axe Maidens started 2009 with a week full of exciting events leading up to an International Rugby Game played by World Champions Leeds Rhinos against the Salford City Reds on January 17th. After two months of rehearsals, working around holiday and vacation schedules, there was much anticipation once the event finally arrived.

The week started out at an appearance at the Grand Opening Week of the O’Brothers Irish Pub in Five Points on January 13th. Amy, Emily, DeeDee and Becky helped spread the news about the Rugby match to a packed house. They signed their Axe Maidens poster, posed for pictures and sold raffle tickets. The grand prize was tickets to the upcoming game.

Then there was an appearance at the UNF vs JU basketball game on January 15th. Axe Maidens Keana, Micah, Becky & Amanda greeted fans and ran into some friends including the UNF mascots and Ronald MacDonald. Some of the Leeds Rhinos and Salford City Reds players also attended the game. The Axe Maidens were invited to join the Leeds Rhino (mascot) center court during the basketball game to help promote the upcoming match.

On January 16th Amy, Becky, Emily and Lauren attended a press conference for the rugby game at Outback Steakhouse. Several local, national and international media were in attendance. Fans were also welcome to attend and everyone was treated to lunch. Both the Leeds Rhinos and the Salford City Reds players & staff attended. The Axe Maidens handed out posters and posed for pictures with both teams.

Although it was in the 50’s on game day (which is a big difference from the 90+ we were used to during the Axemen games) the stadium was filled with about 6,000 fans. This was the first time that the Axe Maidens would be cheering at the new UNF Hodges Stadium. This facility would now be the location of all Axemen home games. Last year the main field was under construction therefore all the games were played on the practice field. This was the largest audience the Axe Maidens had performed in front of to date especially since the game was broadcast over the internet and available internationally.

The Axe Maidens greeted fans as they entered, performed several dances and sold raffle tickets for a variety of prizes. The raffle tickets help to raise $2,000 for 3 Jacksonville charities.

There was a post game celebration at Maverick’s at the Jacksonville Landing where everyone had the opportunity to mingle and have some fun. Venus swimwear sponsored the red & white tops as well as the red dresses worn by the Axe Maidens.
