Welcome Back to the Jungle: The Ben-Gals Return to the Sidelines

The Bengals season kicked off last Sunday night, so that meant it was time for the Ben-Gals return to the sidelines. It was great to see our favs like Deanna (10 season vet), Tara (7 seasons), Adrienne (5 seasons), and Shannon (5 seasons) back again. The Ben-Gals really standout in that, to me, they are one of the most active squads during the game. No stoppage in play goes without breaking into a new routine. Also, it is hard for me to describe, but the age limit of 21 or older (compared to 18 for most squads), to me, gives the squad a different vibe. I won't say more "mature" because they might throw a boot at me, but whatever it is, I like it.

Although featured in the squad photo in the game program, the new uniforms did not make an appearance Sunday night. The first half featured the catsuits, and although to me it seemed a bit warm to me for catsuits, I remembered the GQ article about a Ben-Gals' game day choice between uniforms and catsuits:
"The gals vote: catsuits. "Please! Please! Please!" They love the catsuits. There is nothing sexier than the catsuits."

The second half featured the Carson Palmer jersey halters, black shorts, and the new boots, in the style of the Charger Girls and Redskins Cheerleaders, which the Ben-Gals had made by a California company to help game day comfort.

Unlike the football team, the Ben-Gals have to be ready to perform the entire game during the pre-season. If it was like the football team, Deanna and Tara would sit after the initial drive of the first quarter. But the Ben-Gals looked ready for the regular season. There are some things that come up that are part of the transition to the field (I saw that pesky 20 yard marker get in the way of some steps during the first half) that are part of the learning process, but I was impressed with the poise of the rookies. Of course, these days, rookies generally have big-time experience elsewhere, for instance former AFL Columbus Bombshell line captain Kari is a Ben-Gal "rookie."

I think one of the things that strikes fans of the squads during the game is that one dancer will stand-out beyond expectations. Obviously the veterans and line captains all continue to be great performers, but the award of Sideline Standout of the Night goes to (drum roll…) Lauren A!! Lauren is a corporate accountant who graduated cum laude from Ohio University (the Bobcats, not the Buckeyes). Latasha and Rhonee were also standouts big time, and the voting (just me) was very close.
