MVC in Mexico

Day 1 - Sarah

Hola Vikings Fans!

We are excited to tell you about our recent trip to Mexico! Four lucky MVC were chosen to represent the Vikings and UPA (United Performance Association) at a National Dance & Cheer Competition in Cancun. Melissa, Kara, Katie M, and myself (all 3rd year veterans), were busy working with ANP (Asociacion Nacional De Porristas) on many different events during our stay.

Being guest judges was our main purpose, so we attended a judges’ meeting immediately upon arrival. It was fun to meet the other staff and get information about the events we were going to be involved in. Approximately 1,000 dancers/cheerleaders would be participating in the competition. We looked forward to meeting the teams and couldn’t wait to see all of the talent!

Day 2 - Kara

We woke up early on our first full day in Cancun, excited to get out in the sunshine. First on our agenda was to fit in a workout and we opted for a run on the beach. We quickly learned that running on the sand truly is much more challenging than the sidewalk! We spent the remainder of the free time in the morning checking out the resort, relaxing on the beach and gearing up for the busy days ahead.

In the afternoon, we headed to our first appearance in Mexico. We appeared at a bowling alley in the Kukulcan Plaza shopping mall. When we arrived, there were photographers from local newspapers and magazines waiting to take photos of us for their publications. For the next hour, we took photos and promoted the upcoming cheer and dance competition. The photographers and employees at the bowling alley were very excited to get copies of our 2007-2008 Pinup Calendars and Miller Lite trading cards. The next day, our photos made the front page of the Cancun newspaper!

Our last event of the day was the Gala dinner for the 2008 ANP dance competition at Pat O’Brian’s. This entailed a dinner for the cheerleaders and dancers as well a celebration of the 15th anniversary of the ANP national competition. We began to meet the teams, did some dancing, presented awards recognizing the teams participating in the competition and enjoyed dinner.

What a fun first day in Mexico!

Day 3 – Katie

Our third day in Cancun was exciting because we got to spend more time meeting each one of the teams. The teams were given the opportunity to show us their routines for feedback and suggestions. We helped them with technique, formations, cheer motions and elements of performance. The performers were very receptive and thankful for the comments we gave them. We met with teams for the entire morning and they were practicing hard in the Cancun heat!

After lunch, we started our first day of judging. This competition included small group performances, solo performances and selection of the performer of the year. The performer of the year was selected based on many elements such as their grade point average in school, a solo routine and a short speech. All of the decisions that we had to make as judges that day were difficult. There were so many great performers to choose from!

After we finished judging, we hurried to get ready to do some appearances as Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders around Cancun. Our first appearance was at a popular discotech, Coco Bongo. When we arrived we were greeted by photographers and video cameras! As we proceeded into Coco Bongo, we were welcomed by excited fans! It was very overwhelming yet fun to be welcomed by so many people. The awards for the competition earlier that day were announced. We took photos with fans and watched the amazing “Vegas” show. We had so much fun while we were there! Before we knew it though, it was already time to go to our next appearance.

Our next appearance was a performance at the start of the Pioneers game. The Pioneers are a professional basketball team in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The Mayor of Cancun was even there to show his support. We had a lot of fun but unfortunately were not able to stay and watch the game because we had to hurry to our last appearance for the night.

Our last appearance for the day was on a television show. We had a live interview on a sports show that aired in Mexico and Texas. Since Kara, Sarah, Melissa and I do not speak Spanish, we were thankful to have a translator with us that day. We were able to talk about what cheerleading is like for us with the Vikings, our experiences on the team and encouraged viewers to come support the performers at the competition the next day. We ended the show with a “Go Vikes!” cheer. Hopefully we rounded up some more purple and gold fans in Mexico and Texas!!!

Our third day in Mexico was very fun and exciting, but we were very exhausted and fell asleep as soon as we got back to our hotel. We knew that we had a long day ahead of us on Saturday because we would be judging and making some tough decisions!

Day 4 – Kara

Our fourth day in Mexico was spent judging the dance teams at the Cancun Convention Center. We were invited to be a part of the judging panel for the group dance competition, which took place in the morning. The cheer competition was judged by a different panel in the afternoon. The teams were divided into divisions based on their age bracket. We were very impressed with the performances that we judged throughout the morning. The routines were difficult, visual and well executed. It was a close competition! The top scoring teams from the dance and cheer portions were invited to the Grand Championship, which took place after the cheer competition in the late afternoon. Sarah had the opportunity to judge the championship and select a cheerleading team from Canada as the Grand Champions.

In the evening, ANP hosted a closing celebration at a dance club located directly on the beach. It was a beautiful venue! There was an area for dancing, a swimming pool and plenty of room to lounge and relax after a long day of competing. They even put on Cirque de Soleil shows on the dance floor throughout the evening.

The four of us were so blessed to represent the MVC in Cancun, Mexico this year! It was an experience we will never forget! The four of us had so much fun together and enjoyed every moment of our action-packed weekend.
