In the United States, there are more than 3-million youth, high school and college cheerleaders. THS Investigates: Cheerleading premieres 8 p.m. EST/PST Friday, May 9 on cable channel E!

Cheerleading began as an activity aimed at high school and college students. Then private gyms got into the act and created all-star cheer teams. A new spectator sport was born.

On the surface, cheerleading is often seen as a wholesome, glossy activity, but as the stunts get more complex, injuries and other disastrous consequences can result.

THS looks beyond the perky stereotypes of cheerleaders to reveal what really goes on behind the pom-poms and ponytails. This captivating episode highlights true stories of the risks cheerleaders endure, including intense pressure to succeed, eating disorders and tragic injuries.

Featured in the show are interviews with cheerleaders, coaches, friends and family members who share their experiences coping with the punishing demands and horrifying dangers of cheerleading.

In addition, THS also gets the unique opportunity to travel with a Texas cheerleading squad as it competes in a major national event at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Viewers can witness first-hand the anticipation, exhilaration and stress involved in the process with commentary from the cheerleaders, coaches and over-the-top cheer moms.

Experts from all areas of cheerleading, including members of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, representatives from the National Cheer Safety Foundation, the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators, American Cheerleading Magazine, and many more, offer insider looks at the highs and lows of cheerleading.
