This past weekend on Super Bowl Sunday, while most football fans spent the day in front of the biggest television screen they could find, a group of Raiderettes had the pleasure of visiting Camp Pendleton Marine and Naval base in Southern California. Tiaja, Nicole M., Erica K, and I arrived at Noon to sign autographs and pose for pictures with some of the newest members of the US Marine Corps. We met Marines from all over the United States and were very impressed with the discipline and respect we saw from each of them.

Before lunch, the Marines held a small ceremony to present us with mini-dog tags engraved with the date on one side and the base symbol on the other. We were all very touched by the Marines’ thoughtfulness and will wear the dog tags with great pride and appreciation.

After the presentation, we helped distribute raffle prizes to the group, which included digital media players, and featured a laptop computer as the grand prize.

After dining in the mess hall with the Marines, we got back to work signing calendars and posing for more pictures. Before we left the base, we were paid a visit by the commanding officer at Camp Pendleton's School of Infantry West, Colonel Frederick M. Padilla. He thanked us for “dressing up the place a bit” and awarded us with a certificate and a special gold and red enamel coin in appreciation for spending the afternoon with the Marines.

We felt honored to have been invited to visit Camp Pendleton. Spending time with the individuals who are serving our country made me grateful for the quality of life that I and my fellow countrymen are afforded.
