Auditions for the 2007-08 Philadelphia Flyers Delta Dental Ice Team were held Sunday at the Flyers SkateZone in Vorhees, New Jersey.
Filling out the paperwork. There were ladies from all walks of life at the Skatezone. From lawyers and retail managers to med school students and beauty queens, these women were united by a passion to perform and a love of the Flyers.
Jeannine is a Penn State grad and was a member of the Penn State Dance Team.
Three-year veteran Jen is a West Chester grad who works for the YMCA.
Waiting to get photographed.
The ladies were each given a Flyers t-shirt to decorate in their own distinctive style. She didn't stop with her t-shirt she even decorated her registration number.
After registration was complete the candidates were broken down into six groups and then rotated around the rink to be interviewed. Here Flyers Director of Game Presentation Anthony Gioia questions the ladies.
Questions ranged from "Who's your favorite Flyer?" to "What was your worst job ever?" to "If you were NHL Commissioner for just one day, what would you change?"
After interviews it was time to break for lunch. But it was also time for the skating auditions. Not all the members of the team have to skate, but some must as the ladies are responsible for ice maintenance during the game.
Brrr! And it was cold in the ice rink.
Candidates has to skate on one foot, in a crouch, backwards and...
under a hockey stick supported by two folding chairs.
That's one way to do it.
Others had a little more success.
Then there was the ice maintenance drill. First sweep up the loose ice shavings.
Scoop up the shavings with a shovel
Dump the loose ice into a bucket.
Skate across the rink and dump the ice in a wheelbarrow and then sprint for the goal line. And do it all in less than 70 seconds!
After everyone returned from lunch the first cuts were made.
Congrats for making it through the first round!
Auditions or Corporate Team Building Exercise?
The semi-finalists were broken into 4 teams and given the following supplies: Three sheets of poster paper, four paper plates, four coffee stirrers, four paper clips, a roll of tape and a pair of scissors. The task: construct an object over five feet high that can stand alone and withstand a breeze.
Team "B" and their object.
"The Leaning Tower of Vorhees"
And now let's Dance!
The same teams now had to choreograph a one-minute routine and then perform it for the judges.
Flyers National Anthem Singer and recording artist Lauren Hart was one of the judges.
While the judges retired to make their decisions, Christine suggested a game of "Duck..Duck..Goose!"
Hoping to hear their numbers called.
Group hug for those that made it.
The Final 20.
What's up next? The ladies will get fitted for their uniforms and they will work the pre-season games. Based on their performance twelve will be chosen to be on the new 2007-08 Philadelphia Flyers Delta Dental Ice Team.
