The Calendar: Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders

OK, I know what you're thinking ... "How did this guy get so lucky? He gets to hang out with the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders while they shoot for their swimsuit calendar, and calls it work?"

Well, first of all, let me tell you -- it's not as glamorous as it seems.

During the 10 grueling days of shoots involving 30 different Dolphins Cheerleaders, there were times when the weather was so bad, I was forced to spend 3, maybe 4, hours stuck inside a small room with the Cheerleaders.

Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders

Yeah, just me and a bunch of hot, young, friendly, personable cheerleaders. I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy! And then -- to make matters worse -- when it was nice outside and we shot under the hot sun, there were occasions where we didn't take a water break for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Do you realize how thirsty I was? I mean, sure the frozen margaritas were nice, but I really could've used a glass of water.

In all seriousness, hanging out behind-the-scenes for this year's calendar shoot was an incredible experience. I never fully appreciated all the work that goes into making the swimsuit calendar until I witnessed it first hand.

You may not realize it, but each individual shoot can involve up to 6 or 7 people on site. There's the photographer and the cheerleader director of course, but then you've also got hair and makeup, plus the guy who applies lotion, the guy who dabs sweat, the guy who holds that light reflector thing and then my personal favorite, the guy who creates fake wind to make the girl’s hair blow around in a cool-looking way (and you thought it was just a really windy day, ha!).

Other neat things about this year's Cheerleader Calendar shoot:

Bonus! It's a 16-month calendar that starts in September and lasts through the end of 2008. So, not only do you get to use it for two full football seasons, but you also get to see four extra girls. Not a bad deal.

South Florida Scenery! The entire calendar was shot in our own backyard. After years of going away to the Bahamas or the Keys for the Calendar shoots, the Dolphins thought, "Why not show off the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders in their natural habitat?" It makes sense. Plus, there's a reason that South Florida is one of the most popular sights for fashion photographers all across the world. Beautiful scenery! And I'm not just talking about the people.

The other great thing about South Florida is the wide variety of interesting and eye-catching landmarks that the area has to offer. For example, we traveled from an Art Deco hotel on South Beach, to a Marina in Coconut Grove, to a neighborhood of homes on the water in Stiltsville, to an orange stand in Fort Lauderdale and even stopped by a rodeo in Davie! And, in essence, after touring all those spots with the Dolphins Cheerleaders, we ended up with a perfect "snapshot" of all the beautiful things South Florida has to offer.
