For many hardcore football fans, draft day is the third most important day of the year, following Super Bowl Sunday and Opening Day. Hard core draftniks and fantasy football nuts eagerly await each draft pick, analyzing the selection’s impact on the NFL’s current balance of power. But for most casual fans, watching the draft on TV can be summarized as a moment of excitement followed by 14.59 minutes of dull commentary, video highlights and filler.
That’s why at the 49ers Draft Day Party, there were games, raffles, vendors and, of course, the 49ers Gold Rush cheerleaders. They provided the entertainment when watching the draft inevitably seemed to lag between picks. The Gold Rush were on hand to sign autographs, pose for photos and spread a little 49er cheer.
An estimated 5,000 49er fans were on hand to watch their team select Ol’ Miss linebacker and Butkus Award winner Patrick Willis with their first pick in the 2007 NFL draft. But, since this blog is about professional cheerleading and not NFL football, here are a few photos I took from the day’s events.
The Gold Rush were on hand to cheer on draft party guests as they entered the Santa Clara Convention Center.
The girls lined up as if this was the start of a Niner’s game, so all fans could experience what it must be like to rush out onto the field for player introductions.
Throughout the morning, the Gold Rush cheerleaders graciously posed for photographs with the many fans in attendance.
During the draft proceedings, the Gold Rush also signed autographs and sold raffle tickets, which raised money for the 49ers Foundation.
The 2007 Gold Rush cheerleaders performed two dance routines to the music of Green Day and the theme song from the movie Pulp Fiction.
This cheerleader gets my vote for the most enthusiastic and photogenic 49er cheerleader. Fortunately for me, she performed right in front of where I was sitting.
Watching the NFL draft on ESPN is normally a rather uneventful experience for me, but this year I attended the 49ers Draft Day Party in Santa Clara, CA. It was a fun and enjoyable experience. If you are going to watch the draft, you might as well watch it with a few thousand fans. Not only do you get to experience the excitement first hand, but you also get to photograph of some of the most beautiful cheerleaders in the NFL. I can think of worse ways to spend a Saturday morning.
