Posted by Sasha at 8:07 AM ET

The National Lacrosse League season was on, then it was off, then it was back on again. The 2008 kicked off over the weekend. With the start of the season comes the NLL's cheerleader of th week feature. This week, the spotlight is shining on Nikki from the 2008 Chicago Shamrox.

Chicago native anxious for Saturday's debut

Nikki, a first-year member of the Chicago Shamrox Dance Team, has a busy week leading up to Saturday's home opener, when the Shamrox host the Toronto Rock at the Sears Centre. Aside from her obligations with the Shamrox, Nikki is a full-time education student at DePaul University and hopes to become an elementary school teacher after graduation. Her experiences with the Shamrox have given her a number of additional opportunities to work with children.

Along with some other members of the Shamrox Dance Team, Nikki recently spent time volunteering in the Shop With Cops program, organizing a Christmas party in Hoffman Estates, IL, for underprivledged children.

"I love working with kids," said Nikki. "It's one of the most rewarding things to know that you've made a difference in a child's life."

She has also worked with kids with the Chicago White Sox Pride Crew, where she met Shamrox dance team coordinator Kim Brancamp, who encouraged her to audition.

"Everyone I meet talks about how much fun it is," added Nikki. "From what I've seen, the sport is really intense and high energy. I'm really excited for our first game on Saturday."

Nikki also previously served as an after-school teacher in Napersville, a summer camp counsler for a number of years, and taught religious education at her church.
