The Pro Bowl Rivals From Waynesville NC
Located in the Great Smoky Mountains Waynesville, North Carolina is the county seat of Haywood County. With a population of only 9,232 according to the 2000 Census, the odds of Waynesville producing a Pro Bowl Cheerleader are slim.

But this tiny town nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina is the hometown of TWO Pro Bowl Cheerleaders.
Amy from the Carolina TopCats and Melanie from the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders are both 2006 Pro Bowl Cheerleaders and are both proud to be representing Waynesville.

Amy is a bit older than Melanie so they really didn't know each other back in Waynesville, just kind of knew of one another. But Melanie did grow up with Amy's brother; it's an everyone-knows-everyone kind of place. They both danced, but at rival dance schools: Melanie at Dancers' Pointe and Amy at Angie's Dance Academy.

When they went to college they cheered for ACC adversaries: Amy was a member of the NC State Wolfpack and Melanie was a UNC Tar Heel. And today, of course, they are captains for their respective NFC South squads.

Just to be clear all this rivalry talk is good-natured. Amy and Melanie have been chatting through email about going to Pro Bowl - they are both so excited and tell us that it's comforting to already know one of the girls. They have also met before. When some of the Falcons Cheerleaders took a road trip to Charlotte for the game against the Panthers, they stopped by a TopCats practice. That's when the two first met.

Melanie and Amy both depart the day after the Super Bowl for Hawaii, and have been spending the past few weeks getting ready for their big day. To prepare for Pro Bowl cheerleaders have to learn 10 routines and 4 sideline fillers. It's a lot of material to learn in a short time. Melanie says she has spent many hours alone in front of her television hitting the rewind button trying to learn everything.
Once they arrive in Hawaii, the cheerleaders will get their complete schedule. Based on previous years, it should filled with non-stop appearances and when they aren't at an appearance, the cheerleaders will be practicing for their big day on Sunday.
Congratulations Melanie and Amy!
